Value investing apps compared: seven tools, honest pros and cons

Updated September 10, 2026.

A value investing app has one job that a brokerage app and a plain stock screener do not: tell you whether a business is worth more than its price. That breaks into three steps. Judge the quality of the business from years of statements. Estimate what it is worth. Compare that value to today's price and show the margin of safety.

Seven tools below do some or all of that, and they do it in very different ways at very different prices. This page compares them plainly, including where each one beats Wonderfolio, because a comparison that only flatters the author is not worth reading. Prices and features come from each company's own pricing page, checked in July 2026.

What a value investing app should do

Quality first, then value, then a price to wait for. The order matters. A cheap price on a business with falling returns on capital is not a bargain, it is a slower loss, so a tool that starts from valuation and leaves quality to you has the steps backwards for a value investor. The tools on this page split along exactly that line. GuruFocus, Stock Rover, Stock Analysis and Simply Wall St are libraries: wide coverage, strong data, and a screen you build yourself. AlphaSpread and Fiscal.ai are workbenches: pick a company, then research or value it deeply. Wonderfolio is a shortlist: one fixed quality screen across the 3,100 largest companies in the US and Canada, and a valuation only for the companies that pass. None of these is the wrong shape. They answer different questions, and the honest way to choose is to name your question first.

Simply Wall St

A portfolio command center with global reach. Free plan, $10.95 a month for Premium, native apps on iPhone and Android, brokerage sync, and a fair value estimate with a written narrative attached. The visual snowflake summary is the reason a lot of people learned to read a balance sheet at all.

Where it beats us: Nine global markets against our two. If you want to own quality businesses listed in Europe or Asia, they can value them today and we cannot. They also have brokerage sync and an Android app.

Where we differ: Simply Wall St hands you 120,000 companies and good tools to sort them. We hand you fewer than 100 that already cleared a quality bar, each with a fair value, an intrinsic value, three buy prices and a buy, watch, hold or sell zone. One is a library. The other is a shortlist. Full comparison: Simply Wall St alternative.

GuruFocus

The deepest data set here, and priced like it. GuruFocus charges per region, starting at $549 a year for the USA, and gives you 30 years of financials plus the 13F holdings of 140+ well-known investors. If you want to see what a famous value investor bought last quarter, this is the tool that tracks it.

Where it beats us: 30 years of financial data, guru and institutional 13F tracking, Excel integration, and screener backtesting. We do none of that.

Where we differ: GuruFocus is a research terminal. It rewards the hours you put in. We are the opposite trade: almost no learning curve, and the first pass is already done when you open the app.

Stock Rover

A screener builder for people who like building screens. Premium is $29 a month, and fair value arrives on Premium Plus at $49. Depending on plan you get 400 to 800+ metrics, 5 to 20 years of fundamentals, 7,000+ ETFs, 40,000+ funds, and brokerage integration. It is web based, with mobile access.

Where it beats us: Far deeper data than we carry: 800+ metrics, 20 years of fundamentals, 30 years of dividend history, 40,000+ funds, and brokerage integration.

Where we differ: Stock Rover gives you 300+ metrics and asks you to build the screen. We already built the screen, from the handful of metrics that decide the question, and we do not carry funds or ETFs at all. If you enjoy designing filters, Stock Rover will keep you busy for years. If you want the filtering done, it is the wrong tool. Full comparison: Stock Rover alternative.

AlphaSpread

The closest tool here to what we do, and the honest hardest comparison on this page. AlphaSpread estimates intrinsic value with a DCF and a relative valuation, shows bull, base and bear cases, compares today's valuation to the stock's own history, and can notify you when a price falls to intrinsic value with a margin of safety. It is $144 a year, worldwide, and has a free plan.

Where it beats us: Cheaper than us, worldwide coverage, a free tier, and you can drive the DCF assumptions yourself. They also show bull, base and bear cases, which we do not.

Where we differ: AlphaSpread is a valuation workbench. You pick a company, then you value it. We work the other way round: the quality screen runs first, so you never spend an evening valuing a business that was never going to clear the bar. We also run two valuation methods rather than one, and turn the result into four price zones instead of a single undervaluation percentage.

Stock Analysis

Fast, clean and free, with 130,000+ stocks and funds. Pro is $6.58 a month billed annually and adds alerts and full data access. For looking up a number on any listed company anywhere, it is hard to beat and it costs nothing.

Where it beats us: Free, fast, and worldwide. If you want to look up a number on any listed company anywhere, this is the tool, and it costs nothing.

Where we differ: Stock Analysis gives you the numbers. It does not tell you whether a business is any good, what it is worth, or what price to wait for. That last step is the whole product for us.

Fiscal.ai

Formerly FinChat. A research assistant over filings and earnings transcripts, with 15 years of financials on Pro and 20+ on Max, data auditable back to the source filing, and export. Pro is $49 a month, or $39 billed annually. Fair value, price zones and a quality screen are not listed on its plans.

Where it beats us: 15 to 20+ years of financials against our 10, an AI research assistant over filings and transcripts, data auditable back to the source filing, and export.

Where we differ: Fiscal.ai is built to research one company deeply, with an AI that reads the filings for you. We are built to screen for quality across all of them, then value the survivors. Use theirs after the shortlist, not instead of it. Full comparison: FinChat alternative.

How to choose

Name your problem first, because each tool solves a different one. If it is “I want to look up any company anywhere, for free,” use Stock Analysis. If it is “I want to own businesses listed in Europe or Asia,” every tool on this page except ours can value them today, and Simply Wall St is the easiest. If it is “I want to model one company deeply,” AlphaSpread for the valuation and Fiscal.ai for the filings. If it is “I want to design my own screens,” Stock Rover or GuruFocus, and budget the hours. If it is “I have 500 tickers and no time, and I want to know which few are wonderful companies at attractive prices,” that is the product we built.

Four of the six tools above are cheaper than we are, and every one of them covers more of the world. Three have a free tier and we do not. What we have instead is a 14-day money-back guarantee on the whole product. Use it properly for two weeks, and if it is not for you, take your money back.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is a value investing app?

A value investing app is a research tool built around one question: is this business worth more than its price? That is a different job from a brokerage app, which executes trades, and from a general stock screener, which sorts thousands of companies by whatever numbers you type in. A value investing app does three things in order. It judges the quality of the business from years of financial statements, using returns on capital, debt and growth. It estimates what the business is worth, usually with a discounted cash flow or an earnings-based model. Then it compares that value to the market price and shows the margin of safety. Some tools do all three, some do one, and the table on this page shows which is which. None of them make the decision. They shorten the work before it.

What is the best free value investing app?

Three tools on this page have a genuinely free tier. Simply Wall St gives five company reports a month and one portfolio at no cost. Stock Analysis is free for looking up the numbers on more than 130,000 stocks and funds worldwide. AlphaSpread lets you value three stocks a week without paying, with a DCF and a relative valuation. Which one is best depends on the job. For reading a company quickly, Stock Analysis. For a visual summary a beginner can follow, Simply Wall St. For an intrinsic value estimate with bull, base and bear cases, AlphaSpread. Wonderfolio has no free tier, and this page says so plainly. Instead it carries a 14-day money-back guarantee on the full product, which suits a reader who would rather test the real thing for two weeks than a reduced one indefinitely.

Do value investing apps calculate intrinsic value?

Most of the tools on this page do, and they do it differently, which is why two apps can show two different numbers for the same stock and both be honest. AlphaSpread runs a discounted cash flow and a relative valuation and lets you drive the assumptions. Simply Wall St publishes a fair value with a written narrative. GuruFocus and Stock Rover include valuation tools on their higher plans. Wonderfolio runs two methods, an intrinsic value from owner earnings and a fair value from projected earnings, and turns the result into three buy prices and a price zone. Stock Analysis shows the data and leaves the valuation to you. Whatever the tool, the estimate is only as good as the growth rate and discount rate behind it, so the useful question is not which number is right but whether you can see the inputs and check them.

Is a value investing app the same as a stock screener?

No, though they overlap. A stock screener starts from every listed company and lets you filter by the criteria you choose: a price-to-earnings ratio below 15, a return on equity above 15%, and so on. It is a sorting tool, and it is only as good as the filters you know to set. A value investing app starts from a point of view about what a good business looks like and applies it for you. Stock Rover and GuruFocus are screeners first, with valuation added on top, and both reward the hours you put in. Wonderfolio runs one fixed quality screen across the 3,100 largest companies in the US and Canada and values only the companies that pass. The screener gives you a library. The value investing app gives you a shortlist. Which one you want depends on whether you enjoy building the filters.

Which value investing app works on iPhone, iPad and Mac?

Wonderfolio is the only tool on this page that runs as a native app on all three, iPhone, iPad and Mac, with the same account on each. Simply Wall St has native apps for iPhone and Android alongside its website. Stock Rover, GuruFocus, AlphaSpread, Stock Analysis and Fiscal.ai are web products that you open in a browser, and their pricing pages do not list a native Apple app, which is not the same as saying one does not exist. Whether this matters depends on how you research. If you read company reports at a desk with two screens, a web tool is fine and the browser is the app. If you check a shortlist and its price zones on a phone during the day, then open the same watchlist on a Mac in the evening, a native app that syncs between them is the difference between using the tool and forgetting it.
